Grand Rapids Addiction Recovery Support

  • What are the most common medications prescribed in drug rehab?

The medications used while in rehab depend entirely on the qualifications of the staff and the needs of the client. If you seek help from a medication-assisted treatment facility, various different medications may be prescribed such as Suboxone, Naltrexone, buprenorphine or Vivitrol to address withdrawal symptoms or cravings immediately after detoxification has been completed. Once a person is admitted into an inpatient or outpatient facility and works with their psychiatrists, they may be prescribed antidepressants, sleep aids, or other non-addictive medications. These will be focused more on treating any co-occurring disorders, health complications, or aid in sleep or nutrition while a person is still getting back on track with their health.

What is the difference between a 12-step and a non-12-step program?

The 12-steps are more of a spiritual-based treatment philosophy that gives individuals struggling with addiction a pathway of navigating that addiction and of navigating their life continuing on. Those 12 steps are defined as honesty, faith, surrender, soul searching, integrity, acceptance, humility, willingness, forgiveness, maintenance, making contact, and service. In 12-step programs, addiction is seen as something the person is powerless to control, and once control is given up to some higher power, then healing can begin.

A non-12-step program focuses more so on evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and group therapy. While there may be spiritual or holistic components added to each program, it is not the central method for treating the addiction, which in these programs is viewed as a disease to be changed and treated.

Why are family programs important in addiction treatment?

Addiction is often a family disease, meaning a few different things. Genetics can play a huge role in whether or not a person develops an addiction to substances as well as how quickly that addiction takes place and how strong of a hold it has on the person. In many cases, families with a history of mental illness or substance use disorders see a continuation of substance use in the following generations. But, substance abuse can be damaging to family members and loved ones even if they have never experienced drug use themselves. It can be especially damaging for children with parents who use drugs or alcohol. Family therapy and family-inclusive programs have a wide variety of benefits including education about addiction, providing training for crisis situations, teaching family members how to prevent or act in the case of an overdose, and providing them with support from other family members.
